Key facts about his sector

The numbers employed in this sector include:

  • 375 thousand in sport, recreation, health and fitness
  • 100 thousand in travel and tourism
  • 73 thousand in the gambling industry
  • 43 thousand in self-catering accommodation and holiday parks.

There are approximately 5,000 volunteers working in the leisure industry. The experience will be valued when looking for a job.

The leisure sector employs a significant number of 16-24 year olds. However, many of these are at least 18 due to licensing and insurance requirements.

Across the industries the male/female balance varies. The caravan industry is 64 per cent male; playwork is 86 per cent female.

There is a growing awareness of health and fitness, boosting the number of people taking part in sporting activities. This is fuelling the number of jobs available. Big sporting events such as the World Cup, Wimbledon and the Olympics also increase participation.

The 'staycation', holidaying from home, is a recent development helping to boost the tourism and leisure industries. It has become increasing more expensive to holiday abroad.

The main skills demanded by employers are:

  • communication
  • management and leadership
  • customer service
  • employability skills (including managing own learning, organising and planning, problem solving and team working).

The technical skills in demand include:

  • sporting officials
  • coaches, teachers, instructors and activity leaders
  • playworkers
  • groundsmen/women
  • caravan workshop technicians and fitters.
