Work Matters

Introduction

Work Matters gives information about the labour market (job scene) in the UK, the South West and West of England.

Fourteen different types of work have been included. If the type you are interested in isn't included, don't worry. There's lots of information to help you find out what you need to know. Also, if you have no idea what you want to do, there's information to help you get started.

So, what is labour market information? It includes:

  • what people do at work.
  • how much they earn.
  • how many people work in a particular industry.
  • where they work.
  • what qualifications are in demand.
  • what skills employers need.
  • the balance of full-time to part-time jobs.
  • the number of people who are self-employed.
  • what the future holds for certain types of work.

Why is it useful? It's useful because it lets you:

  • look closely to see what jobs involve - the good parts and the not so good.
  • discover jobs you might not have even heard about.
  • check that you have realistic career ideas and plans.
  • see if the job you are interested in has a future, and change direct if necessary.
  • find out what qualifications and skills employers are demanding and plan how to get them.
  • find out how much people earn and decide if this will allow you to live the life you want.
  • explore where the jobs are and decide which area appeals the most.
  • make a good impression at interviews with some knowledge about the industry you want to break in to.

Search Tips

If you're looking for a general term, like dance this is all you need to enter into the search box.
If you want to look for a dance class, however, you should enter the phrase like this: "dance class", or you will get all results containing dance and class as separate terms.
