Across the UK, the IT and telecoms workforce is approximately 1.4 million.
- 550,000 in the IT industry. Internet services, web design, technology consultation, technology development, systems analysis, programming, systems testing and technology sales.
- 550,000 IT professionals. IT departments and IT support staff in companies.
- 280,000 in telecoms. Engineers, IT professionals, sales and customer service. The UK information technology and telecoms industry expects to create an additional 125 thousand jobs between 2007 and 2017.
59 per cent of IT professionals have a degree or other level 4 qualification.
Employment is still male dominated. Females account for just over a third of all jobs.
Some of the more basic IT jobs, especially programming and support roles, are being off-shored to countries where wage costs are lower.
More sophisticated use of computers by companies is creating demand for a new type of IT worker. Future skill demands include:
- security
- web support
- IT architecture design
- networking
- systems integration
- business analysis
- management and leadership
- project and programme management.
Demand for security, storage and improved search facilities continue to provide the industry with challenges and opportunities.
The UK has one of the most developed and skills-driven information technology sectors in Europe. Training and up-skilling is important to this industry.
The UK exports more IT services than it imports. There are significant work opportunities outside the UK for those with the right qualifications and skills.
