Work Matters

Hairdressing, barbering, beauty therapy and other personal services

Key facts about his sector

The size of the average hair salon is five; the owner plus four employees. The most common beauty salon size is the owner plus two employees.

The entry level qualification for hairdressers and barbers is level 2. For beauty therapists it's level 3.

There are currently no national vocational qualifications for body art (tattooing and piercing).

Technical skills are very important in these industries. So are interpersonal skills, especially the ability to meet individual needs. All these industries depend on repeat business from satisfied customers.

Employers look for these when recruiting trainees:

  • Good verbal communication
  • Social skills
  • Reading and number skills.

Business and management skills will be important for those who want to manage/own a salon or become self-employed. Currently only 5 per cent of salon managers/owners have a management qualification above level 4.

Women dominate the hair and beauty industries. Men dominate in body art; especially tattooing.
