Education and early years care
Key facts about his sector
There are approximately 2.3 million people working in education in the UK and 83 thousand in early years care.
Education has experienced growth in employment since the 1970s. There have been a number of incentives to encourage people to train as teachers. These include increases in basic pay, bonuses for teachers in subjects such as maths and science and payment to help towards training. It is unclear if cutbacks in public spending will affect these.
Schools often struggle to recruit primary and secondary teachers due to lack of recruits.
Part-time employment is education accounts for almost 1 in 2 jobs. The number of full-time jobs and those in self-employment are predicted to fall.
Females dominate employment in primary and secondary education. Only 30 per cent are male.
Early years education provides for children from birth to eight years. The sector suffers from a high turnover of staff; people taking a job but leaving after a relatively short period of time.
Increasing demand from working parents and government investment has led to a lot of additional early years care and education being provided. It is unclear if cuts in government spending will reverse this.
The qualifications needed to work in early years care are increasing. Most staff hold either a level 2 or 3 qualification.
Further education colleges struggle to recruit:
- information technology (IT) specialists
- lecturers in accounting, engineering and construction
- course and programme managers and leaders
- learning support staff.
Skills in demand in the further education sector:
- management skills
- IT skills (for example, using IT to teach and support learning)
- business development
- key and care skills teaching.
Technology will continue to be important in education development. It will be used to support independent study and distance learning. It will also help to improve monitoring and evaluation of learning.
