There are approximately 543 thousand people working, as their main job, in UK creative and cultural heritage industries. This sector includes:

- craft

Just over 27 thousand people have a creative/cultural 'second' job. Two thirds of these are self-employed.
The creative/cultural industries have experienced rapid employment growth in the UK in the last 10 years. This is expected to continue. The demand will be for more highly skilled and highly qualified occupations (managers and technicians).
Work in this sector is often uncertain. It is very dependent on freelancers, the self-employed, short contract workers and volunteers.
Seasonal work is a big factor. Christmas and summer are busy times.
94 per cent of creative/cultural businesses employ fewer than ten people.
Nearly 54 thousand people work in cultural heritage. Museums account for 59 per cent of the workforce. 10 per cent are self-employed and contract workers. 87 per cent of organisations employ people 20 or fewer.
The cultural heritage sector gets a lot of its funding from the government. It may come under great pressure as the government implements spending cuts.
Future demand for cultural heritage jobs is expected in education, visitor services, archaeologists, volunteer coordinators, marketing and fundraiser roles.
40 per cent of employment in design is concentrated in London and the South East. Almost 90 per cent of businesses employ fewer than five people.

- leadership
- information and digital technology
- business skills
- account planning
- negotiation ability
- selling skills, marketing and public relations (PR).
