Catering and Hospitality

Key facts about his sector

It's been a mixed time for the catering and hospitality sector. Those who have done well include cruise operators, tourist attractions, self-catering accommodation and budget operators, providing quality and value for money.

Nearly two million people work in hospitality and catering in the UK. 52 per cent of these work part-time. 7 per cent are self-employed.

Between 2007 and 2017 the sector is expected to create an additional 200 thousand extra jobs. This includes 69,000 additional managerial posts.

Nearly 39 per cent of employees in hospitality work as porters, waiters/waitresses and bar staff. Managers and senior staff make up 25 per cent of the workforce. There is a high level of staff turnover; that's people coming into a job but leaving after a short time. This is thought to be due to pay and conditions. However, the recession, has resulted in staff staying on for longer.

The sector is short of:

  • chefs
  • general kitchen staff
  • housekeeping staff.

There are shortages of management, sales and entrepreneurial skills. New entrants lack customer service skills.

IT skills are also in demand to maximise the potential of social media, e-marketing, website design and mobile phone applications.

The economic downturn does not appear to have affected the amount of training offered. However, 51 per cent of employers have chosen to train in-house.

The 2012 London Olympics and Paralympic Games are expecting 9.5 million spectators. Weymouth and Portland Harbour, in the South West, will host the sailing competitions.

The industry feels it can offer opportunities to a wide range of people, ex-offenders, lone parents, adult returners, long-term unemployed, due to its flexible working patterns. The sector has a high demand for part-time, casual and seasonal workers.
